“D8” is a commonly used label, not the formal name of the Portuguese immigration route. The official pathway covers remote professional activity performed for entities outside Portugal and has separate residence-visa and residence-authorization stages.

The official remote-work residence pathway

AIMA’s formal route is a residence authorization for remote professional activity performed for entities outside Portugal under the immigration framework. See the current AIMA route.

Eligibility and work relationship

The official AIMA pathway concerns remote professional activity for an individual or entity domiciled or headquartered outside Portugal, supported by evidence of the employment or service relationship. This guide does not expand that wording into a broader conclusion about every possible Portuguese employment arrangement.

Income basis

The official legal framework uses a dynamic rule: average monthly income over the preceding three months must be equivalent to at least four guaranteed minimum monthly remunerations (RMMG). The official legal text states the four-RMMG rule. The current RMMG amount should be checked again at publication rather than treated as a permanent euro figure.

Employment and self-employment evidence

AIMA lists evidence such as an employment or service declaration, alongside identity and residence documents. The appropriate evidence depends on whether the applicant is employed or independently providing services.

Residence visa and residence authorization

The residence-visa stage precedes the residence-authorization stage. The visa service is handled through the competent Portuguese consular route, while the residence authorization is handled through AIMA. Review the official gov.pt visa service and the AIMA instructions.

Duration and renewal

AIMA states that the temporary residence authorization is valid for two years from issuance and renewable for successive three-year periods. Current submission implementation should be checked before applying.

Dependants and tax

Full dependant treatment is not summarized in this first guide because it was not retained as a complete verified field. Residence or visa status is not a personal tax conclusion; obtain advice for your circumstances.
