Spain’s international teleworker framework covers a digital nomad visa route for eligible third-country remote workers and an in-country residence procedure. The current official procedures distinguish the visa and residence routes, so check which one applies to your situation.

The official program and legal route

The official materials describe an international teleworker visa and residence authorization under Law 14/2013. See the official visa procedure and the residence procedure.

Employee eligibility

The route covers third-country remote workers using telematic means, including employees of foreign companies. The Ministry FAQ describes the international teleworker framework and its remote-work definition. Read the official FAQ.

Self-employed eligibility and client boundary

Self-employed professionals are included in the official visa procedure. The procedure states that work for Spanish companies is limited to 20% of the professional activity; do not generalize this into unrestricted local employment.

Qualification and experience

The official visa procedure lists a relevant recognized degree or an equivalent professional-experience route among the qualification options.

Financial requirement

The official procedure expresses the main teleworker requirement as 200% of the applicable monthly SMI, with additional percentages for dependants. The current SMI amount must be checked at publication rather than hardcoded here.

Application route

Applicants outside Spain use the national visa route through a Spanish diplomatic mission or consulate. Applicants legally in Spain may use the in-country residence procedure through the official electronic process. Review the official electronic office.

Visa, residence, and duration

The official visa procedure describes a one-year permit. The in-country residence procedure describes a permit of up to three years, subject to its conditions.

Renewal summary

The official electronic office provides a renewal route for Law 14/2013 international-mobility authorizations, subject to continuing to meet applicable requirements. This guide does not invent a detailed digital-nomad renewal checklist, filing window, or absence condition.

Dependants and tax

The official procedures provide a family-document framework and financial-resource treatment, but individual family cases require checking the applicable procedure. Visa or residence status is not personal tax advice or a guarantee of a tax result.
